St.Mary’s has a fervent decades old love for Rugby: once called Rugger by the school’s forefathers. The beginning of the Saints rugby history is interlaced with lots of nostalgia, yellow school annual pages and many an unforgettable Priest .Most of these clerics served as Headmasters, Coaches and Teachers at the school. It was one such man of the collar who began the now popular Blackrock festival- an annual Saints event. Father Cormac O’ Brachlain a Headmaster at the school began the event in 1983. It is to the Saints a day where they show our unbridled love for the game. Held each year Blackrock is now the biggest one day rugby festival in the country. Reverently, this and other Rugby traditions are still kept to keep alive the school’s old and kicking Rugby spirit.
